Kid Room Decor

I think the most difficult room to decorate in a home is a bedroom. It's not the place you invite everyone in to see and, as a result, often gets the least decorating attention. I'm in the process of making over my own bedroom because, in a house with this many people, you've got to have a sanctuary to escape to. I think this is even more true for kids because a bedroom is often their only place to go in the house that's all theirs.

I've blogged about helping Mia re-do her bedroom for months (see the style board I created above) and the process began with the idea that the walls would be painted immediately. They are a bubblegum pink she picked herself when she was four. She is a girly-girl through and through and, as much as it pains me, she STILL loves that pink three and a half years later. The trick? Finding a way make it about her and not me. So far we've gotten pretty far with her room and many of the choices made in the style board have translated to the actual room to create a sweet space that is all Mia.

One of the things I offered Mia early on was the option to find new furniture. Her bed and dresser are antiques my Mom found and refinished for me in my early teens. I still love them but since this was about Mia, I wanted her to decide whether to keep them or not. To my surprise, she told me they were her favorite things in the room and we decided to keep them as is.

Mia's bedside area. The little side table used to be my mother's and for years I coveted it. When Mia needed somewhere to put her lamp my Mom offered it up for her room. Thanks Mom!

Mia's inspiration board where she keeps her favorite art projects, her copy of the family motto and other little things that inspire her.

The little green bench is a DIY project I've blogged about before.

And that's Mia's indoor swing! Another thing I love about kid rooms, you can add a little whimsy you wouldn't feel free to do in your common spaces.

I don't like everything she insisted on (the border for instance but she LOVES it) but I learned along the way that a mix of a Mom's good design sense combined with Mia's sentimental, lighthearted approach helped create a room we could both find real beauty in.

  1. Your daughter's room came out amazing! My parents didn't care much about what my room looked like, I always had white walls and it just looked like everything was thrown together. But on the other end of the spectrum I hate those super-cutesy matchy-matchy rooms that were obviously desinged by a decorator. Your daughter's room shows a lot of personality without being cliche. I love that you worked with her to make it a sanctuary for her. She is a very lucky child.
